Knee Pain
The bane of many runners’ lives, knee pain is often caused by repetitive strain. It’s often predicated
by a lack of strength or stability in the hip, knee or foot and tends to come on gradually. The location
of your symptoms usually depends on the structures involved. For example, pain in the front of the
knee is often a result of stress on the patello-femoral joint (knee cap), whereas pain on the outside
of the knee usually correlates to issues with the Illio-tibial band. However, it’s not always that
straight forward and a detailed assessment with a physiotherapist is strongly advised if you’re
experiencing pain in your knee. Osteoarthritis is another common cause of knee pain and it’s widely
thought that if you have a diagnosis of this, it means you can never do any exercise again because
your knees will wear out. This really isn’t case, in fact, exercise is good for osteoarthritis. You just
need to start at your tolerable level and build up gradually over time. Our physiotherapists are
experts in managing long term conditions and tailoring rehabilitation programs to get you back to
your activity goals in your own time.
When you come to see us for knee pain, we will firstly sit down to discuss your symptoms and give
you an opportunity to tell us what you’ve been through. Then we’ll carry out a thorough assessment
to get to the root cause of your symptoms, before treating you to provide you with some relief. Then
we’ll devise a tailored rehabilitation plan to help you get back to your normal self.
