Ankle Pain
Our ankles go through a lot. They provide us with a sturdy base of support when walking and, when
we run, the structures at the back of the ankle take up to 8 times our body weight with each step!
It’s no wonder then that sometimes things go wrong and, whether it’s because the ankle isn’t strong
enough, we’re doing too much too soon, or there’s something wrong with a specific structure in the
ankle, it’s vital that it’s managed early in the injury process. Like the knee, the location of the pain
can tell us a lot. Pain at the back tends to be an issue with the achilles tendon or the heel bone,. If
it’s painful on the outside this tends to be a ligament strain or an issue inside the joint. Pain at the
front tends to be something blocking the joint, like a bony spur. There’s also a network of strong
tendons running around our ankles which can become painful with exercise. It’s important to
ascertain the root cause of your ankle pain, and the structures involved, in order to manage your
injury properly.
When you come to see us for ankle pain, we will firstly sit down to discuss your symptoms and give
you an opportunity to tell us what you’ve been through. Then we’ll carry out a thorough assessment
to get to the root cause of your symptoms, before treating you to provide you with some relief. Then
we’ll devise a tailored rehabilitation plan to help you get back to your normal self.
